The myth exploded: urban poverty in the PacificGeography Dept, University of the South Pacific, P. O. Box 1168, Suva, Fiji; FAX: (679) 301487. This paper describes how the extent and intensity of urban poverty have been under-estimated in the Pacific and how urban poverty's many dimensions - in health, housing and living conditions and school attendance as well as incomes - not fully acknowledged. The first part of the paper reviews urban poverty in the whole region while the second looks in more detail at urban poverty in Fiji. A concluding section suggests new initiatives needed to address urban poverty.
