Information and participation within environmental management

Graham Haughton

CUDEM, Leeds Metropolitan University, Calverley Street, Leeds LS1 3HE, UK g.haughton{at}lmu.ac.uk

This paper reviews the key components of processes for informed and participatory environmental management and planning in urban areas. These include techniques more commonly associated with external technical expertise such as environmental impact assessments, capacity studies and environmental audits and initiatives that place more emphasis on the role of the community in understanding the environment and helping develop appropriate responses. The paper also discusses how these fit within broader debates on "good governance".
